E69 is E, G#, B, C# and F# — E6 with the ninth added as well.
It sounds wide and entirely at rest. The modern way to voice a tonic when a triad is too bare and a maj7 too pointed.

How to play E69
Five notes and four fingers, so something has to go. Keep G# (it fixes the quality) and C# and F# (what the symbol is about). Let B and E go, in that order — a perfect fifth says nothing the root has not, and in a band the bass has the root.
Play E69 as a shell — root, third and seventh — and the spare string takes the #11 (A#).

How to use E69
How you get to it. The turn that lands on E69 is F#m7 to B7 — the ii and the V of E — and B7 shares its third and seventh with F#m7, so the hand barely moves between them.
In which keys. Every note of E69 belongs to C# minor (the ♭III), E major (the I), F# minor (the ♭VII), Ab minor (the ♭VI), A major (the V) and B major (the IV).
What to play over E69
E69 is every note of the E major pentatonic, and nothing else. It also sits inside E major, E mixolydian, E lydian and E lydian dominant.
